Matching the existing house and the extension are definitely necessary. The most important areas to look at are the brickwork (where it joins the existing house – it can be tooth cut here to make the whole thing flow seamlessly) and the roof tiles. Original roof tiles age, so you have a problem here. One way to get the roof of the extension and the original roof to match is to bring some of the original roof tiles out of the main roof and have them at the front of the extension roof. The areas you’ve exposed by doing that can be covered safely with lookalike tiles because they are visually further away.
In all cases – make sure your design is going to be approved by Building Control. Make sure you use the right insulation for walls, floors and so on. There’s no joy in getting halfway through a project only to have it vetoed by the powers that be....
